Healing light

Gill Jacobs reports on the wonders of Low Level Laser Therapy

Over the last 35 years, thousands of studies, on humans and animals, have shown that appropriate doses and wavelengths of light are therapeutically beneficial in tissue repair and pain control.

Because light surrounds us every day it is easy to take it for granted. Yet what we perceive as light is really a form of energy which behaves both as a wave and as a stream of particles, called photons. Photons are tiny packets of energy which your body can use for healing. In the late Seventies, German biophysicists demonstrated that every cell emits at least 100,000 light impulses per second at a variety of frequencies.

One of the scientists, Popp, showed that weak light emissions of low intensity were able to control the body, and that light in the body may be the factor that determines health and illness. Only cancer cells, he says, do not emit light.

What is Low Level Laser Therapy?

Low Level Laser Therapy is the application of laser light at low intensity.
Red and near infrared (NIR) light have therapeutic benefits, and it is these lights that are found in Low Level Laser Therapy.

Conditions helped by therapeutic light include:

  • Inflammatory conditions – bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, etc

  • Wound care and tissue repair – diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers, bed sores, mouth ulcers, fractures, tendon ruptures, ligament tear, torn cartilage etc.

  • Pain control – low back pain, neck pain.

  • Pain associated with inflammatory conditions – Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, muscle cramps, etc.

How does this work?

One of the most important functions of Low Level Laser Therapy is, say researchers, to re-polarize sick and injured cellular membranes. This allows for essential nutrients to transfer from the blood into the cell. Research has shown that Low Level Laser Therapy can increase cellular ATP (body fuel) by as much as 150%. This speeds up the healing process.

Is it safe?

The maximum power outputs are less than 1 watt of energy. They are classified as nonsignificant risks.

Where do you get it?

Since 2002, low-powered light devices have secured FDA approval in the US for pain management with specific conditions such as Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Some manufacturers have taken this safe, user-friendly technology out of the clinical setting to also make it available for use at home. As with all new procedures and technologies, it takes some time for the information to filter through to those who could benefit.
