Between
the lines
Nigella Lawson, something of an
iconic figure as a domestic goddess these days, gave her thoughts on make-up
and the ageing face in her Times column recently. Only the unlined can wear a lot of
make-up, she asserted, the older you get the less you can get away with.
She was of course referring to the problem we all have with
make-up settling into lines on the face and accentuating them, whether it is foundation,
eye-colour or even lipstick.
Her partial solution came in the form of recommending three products
that work in slightly different ways. Prescriptives
Magic range Invisible Line Smoother, price £27, "is so good its
spooky filling up the cracks and leaving a smooth surface on which to apply make
up.
Another smoother to go under make-up is Estee Lauders Idealist Skin Refinisher price
£29, which glides over the skin rather than settling in lines.
As for foundation, she suggests the lightest of products - Shisheidos
Liquid Compact, price £18, for smoothness, cover, natural look and rejuvenating
capacity. Because it goes on with a wet sponge it can be applied very, very thinly.

The Test of Time
Products with true staying power, recognised as the best in
their field
The powers of olive oil
A budget-conscious ploy to help the skin, especially winter-chafed
skin, is to use the softening and feeding powers of olive oil. Whenever a bottle of oil is
finished, tip it upside down onto a tissue or even onto your hands, and
gradually massage into hands, elbows, knees ankles and shins, and any other starved
skin places. In Provence, where the olive oil is good and treated with traditional
reverence, women mix remnants of oil with a little lemon juice for a feed for face and
neck.
Instant skin
rejuvenation
A pick me up from Clarins that has turned
many a tired, end-of-the day face into an appearance of enthusiasm for the evening
ahead is Beauty Flash Balm. Pat on to the
face, do not massage in. Within a few minutes the skin appears tighter, and seems to have
found a new glow. Instant skin rejuvenation! A must-have accessory for all age groups.
Price £20 per tube.
